The Death of Leadership report is here

‘The Death of Leadership’ is finally here. Please
download and read this 63-page report, and
tell us what you think. Have we got it right?

And do our suggestions for what you
should do next make sense for you?

The story is that we’re angry. We’re angry that
your leadership has been put under such pressure.

And we don’t blame you if you feel like giving up
from time to time. (It would be too easy to just be
a dictator wouldn’t it?)

But it would be a mistake to give up on leadership.

You know the old saying ‘if you can’t beat them join them’? Well, that would be a mistake in your case. Because the situation you’re in isn’t your fault. And the solution is totally within your grasp.

In a few short steps you can overcome the resistance you’re experiencing. Then you can begin to build widespread support for what you want to achieve.

We know you have high aspirations for the future. For your business, your team and - yes - for yourself, too. And we want to help you achieve those ambitions.

Is this your first time here? Download ‘The Death of Leadership’ now

If this is your first visit to the site, ‘The Death of Leadership’ report is a rant about the issues raised by our leadership research over the last year.

And we need your feedback.

Are we on target with the issues raised by the research? Is anything missing? Please comment on the blog. Download the report and read it now. I don’t know how long I’m going to leave this on the web. I’m expecting a few complaints.

Thanks for your help.

Steven

“Touché!”. Yes, Steven: those are real issues I am facing. Your report is a great introduction and complement to your books, particularly “The 7 Failings of Really Useless Leaders”. I will give a copy of this report with each book I sell here in Portugal!

Steven:
I do think that you have captured the anxiety within us correctly. And the “death of leadership” has been accurately captured as: Overwhelmed + Frustrated = Helpless

When you started this research I was hoping that you would come back with a magic wand and in the meantime figured it out that throwing hands up in the air aint gonna take me forward. Rather, I started looking at it as some unknown one raising the bar for me and asking me to overcome it. Your negotiation tips, especially on depersonalizing my opinion and using the Authority tactic and Consistency actually helped a lot. All of it clubbed with “what my boss wants” and ofcourse “focusing on what I want to walk away with from the negotiation table” made things look simpler and it worked.

In a nutshell, I can say that the simple answer to the most complex challenges (as it seems to us) lies within us — the agility of our leadership style BUT it certainly helps a lot if someone like you provide the right perspective through your coaching.

If you can create a forum where we get to hear from others on how they solved their leadership challenges, I bet it would be a great information exchange and ofcourse the networking — all of it diced with your view and tips. So yes a coaching program would be of great help.

Hi Philippe and thanks. Your comments are appreciated as always.

I think that some of the tactics and strategies we’re about to reveal here may work very well in Portugal. I’ve always thought that Portuguese managers are extremely skilled, socially, so the more advanced and assertive interpersonal skills we’ll be sharing could have a huge impact.

But a small number of Portuguese managers have said to me that they’re frightened of putting these strategies into practise. ‘The boss is the boss’ one manager said. I hope they do try these strategies, though, because until you try you don’t get the positive feedback that these things really make a difference.

Good luck with your blog!

Hi Prabhas and thanks for your thoughtful comments (as always) and the feedback. I’m glad the influencing skills elements are paying dividends. It’s why I teach both negotiations AND leadership - the two skillsets are fundamentally related it seems to me.

I laughed over your ‘magic wand’ comment - I seem to remember using this phrase a lot when we were together at London Business School.

But I WILL be providing more tactics and strategies in future short videos over the coming weeks.

But for folks who can’t wait, we will be launching a short but intensive coaching programme very soon. Jacqueline and I are just finishing a massive mindmap of all the things we want to cover in the programme.

So what I’ll do in a day or two is publish a video for you of the mindmap and what we’re thinking of including. Then you can see if this is the sort of material you think will help.

How does that sound?

I thought the video spoke of several good points. It is my belief that I will be more confident in a leadership roll, the longer I listen to Steven’s videos and read his material. Too many times in the past have I heard how others will always be better then me. That type of language was a motivating judgment to succeed and rub it in their faces. I now no longer care what they think.

They can think their way in their own little world, as small as it is. I have only myself to prove my worth too, if I want to prove it to myself. If I present a front of strength against those against me, then I will come out on top, even if the bottom is as high I will get. As long as I am happy about what I am doing and will continue to do, then great for me. If I do not get what I want, then still great for me because I tried for the position instead of sitting back and doing nothing. I have heard of the saying, “Tried and failed is better then never trying a all.” I am slowing believing this quote.

Hi Christopher, I’ve been away teaching so forgive my slowness in replying to your valuable comments round the site.

So - late - I want to thank you for your feedback - I’m pleased you’ve got some value from this material here.

You know, your comment helps me to realise that what I’m planning is absolutely the right thing to do.

There are a few new videos coming here and then I move away from the Death of Leadership to a new future for leadership for people willing to make a commitment to become even better leaders.

And to be honest I believe that this really only means your realising that you are ALEADY a good leader. It’s just that some of the sharks and sheep around you maybe fooling you into thinking otherwise.

Bear with me over the next few days and weeks as everything becomes clear.

Take care
Steven
