How good leadership helps you win more often

How can you help your people to win more often? Well, we’re in a race without a finish line.
And that’s the problem.

Frankly, we can learn a thing or two about leadership from the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
And it is all down to the quality of your leadership.

Developing your people is the fastest way to lose them: true or false?

How much do you agree that developing your people is the fastest way to lose them to the competition? Or do you think it’s the best way to keep them?

Post your comments on the blog. We love to hear from you.

Thanks to the Hong Kong Jockey Club

Our thanks to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for allowing us to film on the premises. This is the first of a number of vides recorded at the Club. Come back tomorrow for an insight into how to influence the boss.

Developing our people is the winning strategy for a manager, department and any organization. I liked the idea of educating the team about the importance of Training season, Performance Season and Cooldown season. This could develop a meaning for them to channelize their effort for the winning performance.

Steven,

You asked - “How much do you agree that developing your people is the fastest way to lose them to the competition? Or do you think it’s the best way to keep them?”

I agree that developing your people is just one of the things managers must do to keep them. To keep them you need to provide very high quality support.

Developing and training them is just one of many support functions that are the responsibility of any boss to provide. The others are things like tools, procedures, discipline, direction, policies, planning, information, parts, material, technical advice, peace of mind, and others. The quality of this support is your leadership and it will dictate the quality of your people’s performance, will “lead” them to very high or very low or somewhere in between performance and respect for their work, their customers, each other and their bosses.

If your support is uniformly of very high quality, they will love to come to work, outcompete your competition every time, be highly creative and innovative and productive, and have very high morale. They won’t want to leave you.

One further comment. You used the term “flogging”. Any manager who even considers that this word describes in any way describe how he treats employees is his/her own worst enemy.

Best regards, Ben
